Installing Echo
- Install Echo from the Chrome Web Store — one click, free, no account.
- Visit x.com, chatgpt.com, or a Substack article and click the headphones button. Your first click asks to download the voice model (~80 MB, one time); later clicks play instantly.
- Click the Echo icon in your toolbar to open the side-panel player with the transcript, scrub bar, and speed controls.
Troubleshooting
The first play spins for a long time
The one-time voice download is ~80 MB, so the first Listen can take a few seconds to a minute depending on your connection. Every play after that is instant and offline. If it spins forever, check that your network allows downloads from huggingface.co.
No headphones button appears
Make sure you're on a supported page: an X post timeline, a ChatGPT conversation, or a Substack article page. If the button still doesn't appear, the site may have changed its layout — reload the page, and if that doesn't help, email us with the page URL. On unsupported pages, select text and right-click → Read selection with Echo.
Audio stopped working after an update
Open chrome://extensions, find Echo, and click Reload. If that doesn't fix it, open the side panel → Settings → Clear voice cache, then play again (this re-downloads the voice model once).
A word or ticker is mispronounced
Open the side panel (click the Echo toolbar icon), open Settings with the gear, and add a rule in the Pronunciationeditor — for example, map "NVDA" to "Nvidia."
Reporting A Bug
Email hello@echoreadaloud.com with:
- What you did, what you expected, and what happened instead
- The page URL (X, ChatGPT, Substack, or other)
- Your Chrome version (
chrome://version) and Echo version (shown at the bottom of Settings in the side panel)
Uninstalling
Open chrome://extensions, find Echo, and click Remove. This deletes the extension, its settings, and the cached voice model from your browser.
